GoOrganic – Achieve through outreach

Where we work

Our pilot project sites are located in Mukono and Hoima district, central and western Uganda. Agriculture is the main economic activity and source of income, and the majority of farmers are smallholders with limited landholdings.

The project teams are comprised of farmer groups that have successfully transformed into organic farming associations, and two NGOs that have already worked with the farmer groups before. The NGOs facilitate farmers' transition to commercial organic agriculture through training, demonstrations, excursions, regular supervision and backstopping meetings.

Our results so far
  1. Capacity development. Farmers have become active players in organic agriculture value chains and developed their capacities to make better informed production and marketing decisions.
  2. Social organisation. 72 farmer groups have formed 6 organic farming associations in close cooperation with existing market institutions and civil society organisations.
  3. Livelihood improvement. 1,200 households have opted for the transition to organic agriculture as means to sustainably improve their livelihoods.
  4. Market linkages. Farmers have gained access to domestic and international organic markets and entered strategic partnerships with organic export companies.
  5. Informed strategies. Spatial analysis has been used for scaling up experimental results from plot, to village to sub-county and district level.
  6. Shaping communication. Mechanisms are developed for collaborating with NGOs, the private sector and public partners who want to use the ERI approach beyond the pilot sites.
